Beyond the Helmet: A Complete Gear Safety Check for the New Riding Season

A helmet is the most important piece of riding gear — but it’s not the only one that matters.

Real rider safety comes from how all your gear works together: helmet, gloves, jacket or hoodie, pants, and boots. Each piece plays a role in protection, control, comfort, and focus on the road.

Before your first ride of the season, a full gear check takes just a few minutes — and it can make a real difference in how confidently you ride.

Why a Full Gear Check Matters

Riding gear isn’t just about impact protection. It also affects:

  • Grip and control

  • Stability and balance

  • Visibility and awareness

  • Comfort over longer rides

When gear isn’t functioning as intended, riders often compensate without realizing it. A pre-season check helps catch issues early — before they become distractions.

Start with the Helmet

Your helmet should always be the first check. Make sure:

  • The shell and liner are in good condition

  • The fit feels secure and familiar

  • The retention system engages smoothly and holds firmly

  • The visor or shield is clear and undistorted

If something feels off, don’t guess. Pause and get it checked before riding.

Gloves: Control and Feel Matter

Gloves are your connection to the bike. Before riding, check that:

  • Palms and fingers show no thinning, holes, or tearing

  • Stitching at stress points is intact

  • Armor or padding is properly positioned

  • Closures hold securely without slipping

Worn gloves can reduce grip and feedback — two things you rely on every time you ride.

Jackets and Riding Hoodies: Armor & Coverage

Your jacket or riding hoodie should protect without shifting.

Look for:

  • Armor in the correct positions (shoulders, elbows, back)

  • Secure armor pockets that don’t allow movement

  • No tears, seam separation, or abrasion damage

  • Zippers and closures that operate smoothly

Proper armor placement matters just as much as having armor at all.

Pants and Boots: Stability from the Ground Up

Lower-body gear often gets less attention, but it’s just as important. Check that:

  • Pants show no thinning in high-impact areas

  • Knee and hip armor stays in place

  • Boot soles are firmly bonded and not separating

  • Ankle protection and closures are secure

  • You have good grip on foot pegs and pavement

Stable footing supports confident riding.

Fit, Comfort, and Visibility

Gear should feel secure without restricting movement. Before riding:

  • Make sure nothing shifts when you move

  • Adjust layers if your riding gear fits differently in colder or warmer weather

  • Check reflective or high-visibility elements, if applicable

Comfort affects focus — and focus affects safety.

Make Gear Checks Part of Your Riding Routine

A full gear safety check isn’t about being overly cautious. It’s about starting the season prepared.

At Voss, we believe informed riders are safer riders. That’s why we encourage riders to take a few minutes before the first ride of the season — and again throughout the year — to make sure their gear is ready for the road.
